Automobile business has become its sole identity!

Hyundai means ‘modernity’ and what more successful in the modern times than marking an eye-popping $57.4 billion in sales and $2.2 billion in profits during 2005 alone? Started by a band of brothers, this huge car manufacturing titan was just a small part of a bigger Hyundai group. But just as growth has been with it from its inception, family feuds have not left it alone too! It all started with founding of the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. in 1947 and the subsequent introduction of the automotive division (named Hyundai Motor Co.) in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung and his seven brothers. In 1980 the brothers ended their bitter relationships with a division of assets and Chung Ju-yung was left with the automotive division. Since then the company has never looked back. The company’s first car model – Cortina – was released in co-operation with Ford Motors, but the first hit from its stable was ‘Pony’, that was designed on Mitsubishi’s technology platform in 1975. The year 1986 saw the chaebol successfully enter the US market and in 1988, it also became technologically independent. A father of eight sons, he appointed Chung Mongkoo as his successor in 1999. Luckily, despite there being no signs of love amongst the brother, the company never had to bear the brunt unlike many other business families. Sadly, despite displaying shrewdness in strategic decision-making, Chun Mong-koo was indicted on April 28, 2006 for charges of embezzling $106 million. He was bailed out in July 2006 and is currently carrying on his duties of leading the company. And despite Hyundai ensuring that the world enjoys a smoother ride, the question is, “will it?”

Out of every application downloaded, the producer gets 50-75% of the share. And a movie on an average clocks over half a million ringtone downloads. “Since mobile content has become such a huge hit, producers are now upping their shares,” adds Rajiv. Considering that India’s mobile density is increasing by the day and is now penetrating the smaller cities, the Bollywood clout on mobiles is just going to grow. In-film advertising has been another major revenue generator, as exemplified by the immensely successful Krrish from Rakesh Roshan’s Filmkraft Productions. Que: How can a low-level employee initiate change in an organization that has stuck with the status quo for a long time? (Name withheld, Nairobi, Kenya)

Ans: You can’t. Or, 99% of the time, you can get killed trying. Look, most organizations these days understand the need for continual change. They know that if they don’t constantly improve the way they do things, they will be lost in the competitive dust. They also know that people generally resist change and must be goaded into it by a passionate change agent with a loud rallying cry. But it’s rare for companies to want that rallying cry to come from the mouth from a junior player without dirt under his nails and sweat on his brow. Which is why at most companies, change initiatives are led from the top, or at the very least, by middle managers who have earned their stripes with years of great results. So if you want to change your organization, follow their lead. As an individual contributor, don’t just deliver – over-deliver.

Do what is expected of you, and more. Work hard to make your boss smarter and her life easier and your whole team’s performance look better than ever. It may take time, but eventually, you’ll be rewarded with a team of your own. You can then make it a model for the kind of change you imagine for the company. And if that effort succeeds, eventually you will win the respect, authority and higher-level positions you need to initiate the wide-scale change campaign you desire. If our “work-and-wait” answer leaves you frustrated, then perhaps you need to move on. It was his elder brother who dealt him the first of his raw deals, when the Ambani empire split last year, after a long public showing of the cracks within the family. Recently, a group of senior lawyers and business executives gathered for the General Counsels’ Roundtable at Stanford University under the aegis of the Collaboratory for Research on Global Projects to analyze the legal issues raised by a decade’s worth of failed and distressed projects in emerging markets. One outcome of that meeting was the promising, although still not widely accepted, idea that contracts can be redesigned as “living, breathing” frameworks for ongoing negotiation, yet still fix terms solidly enough that parties can obtain necessary financing and operate with acceptable levels of certainty. As one general counsel noted, “Businesspeople want to know: If this thing goes all screwy, what’s my safety net? What guarantees do I have? What is the very worst it can be?” To address conflicting needs for flexibility and predictability, the group proposed two alternatives for improving project outcomes. The first involves the creation of a “governance model” to better align the economic interests of public and private parties through co-ownership and co-governance of the project company, as is now popular in so-called public-private partnerships.

Bleeding the Palestinians through a thousand cuts...

In the ensuing battle zone of West Asia, the dilapidated economy and gradual emasculation of the Palestinian State by the strong arm tactics of Israel are least discussed and oft en ignored. Imposition of curfews and closures in the whole of West Bank and Gaza Strip has had the most crippling effects on the Palestinian economy. It is estimated that on each day of closure, the Palestinian economy loses about $8.45 million, totaling up to $336 million in the last year alone. This estimate does not include the loss to the physical infrastructure and human lives. Unemployment in Palestine is slated to increase from 23% in 2005 to 39% in 2006. Also, the UN estimates poverty will shoot up from 44% in 2005 to 67% in 2006. Even support funds from Israel (in the form of tax receipts), US, UN, EU and Russia were cutoff after Hamas emerged victorious in the 2006 elections. The Palestinian authorities are now facing a cash deficit totaling $1 billion a year, which has forced it to postpone all salary payments to its employees. The world has to lift this blockade; Palestine is no Iraq, and Hamas no Saddam Hussein...

Amazing ‘Oil’onomics {IIPM B&E Article}

Saudi Arabia provides for the largest free market economy in the entire Middle East, largely fuelled by its huge crude oil and natural gas reserves. The country is estimated to have 261 billion barrels of crude oil reserves that would last for another 85 years. This amounts to nearly one-third of the total oil reserves found across the world till date. Not surprisingly, the Saudi Arabian economy is largely oil-driven. Around 90% of its exports and nearly 75% of all government revenues come from the sale and usage of oil. Oil has done wonders for the GDP as well as for per capita income. In 2005, the per capita income stood at $12,800 per annum while the GDP registered a healthy growth rate of 6.1%. The revenues earned out of oil are now being spent to develop its agriculture and industrial sectors including iron & steel, construction materials, food processing, engineering, chemicals and metal fabrication. In terms of exports, the basket is being dominated by petroleum and other hydrocarbons. Exports in 2005-06 were $19.01 billion. US, China, South Korea and Japan were the major trading partners. On the other hand, machinery & equipment, processed food, chemicals, motor vehicles and textiles are amongst the major import items for Saudi Arabia; US, Germany, Japan and China being the major suppliers. Total imports for 2005-06 were $59.42 billion. With the government allowing 100% FDI within the country and joining the WTO, Saudi Arabia has seen a boost in inflows of foreign direct investment, although, the figures were still miniscule at $1.89 billion in the year 2004 (latest UNCTAD report). Barring the evergreen oil industry, machinery & equipments, processed food, chemicals, motor vehicles and textiles have also been able to attract most of the investment by showing promising growth potential. Investments from global majors like Sumitomo Chemicals, Royal Dutch Shell and Acetex, certainly show a bright industrial future for the country. Saudi companies are also showing more interest in the services and retail sectors. Though these sectors are at a nascent stage, they are getting prepared to attract higher foreign participation soon.

Mulayam had ordered firing on kar sevaks in Ayodhya that led to the downfall of V.P.’s government...

His government was pulled down by the BJP after L. K. Advani’s Ram Rath Yatra was stopped on Singh’s instructions & Advani arrested by the then Bihar Chief Minister, Lalu Prasad. Singh did not contest the next election & went into political exile. And voila, he resurfaced two years ago, agitating against dislocation of slum dwellers in Delhi. And then again, after another hiatus, he was back two months ago; this time reviving Jan Morcha with filmactor turned MP, Raj Babbar as its President. Babbar, disgusted with Samajwadi Party’s (SP) General Secretary Amar Singh’s dominance in the party, was already spewing venom against both Amar Singh & SP President, Mulayam. He befriended Babbar to get back at both Anil Ambani & Mulayam. V. P. accused Mulayam of having kept him in dark during his stint as UP chief minister in 1990 while handling the temple movement. Mulayam had ordered firing on kar sevaks in Ayodhya that led to the downfall of V.P.’s government. Mulayam ditched him again to save his government in UP with Congress’ support. While Mulayam let out his side of the story in party leaflets, V. P. always kept his secrets close to his chest. At 75, V. P. released his memoirs titled Manzil se Zyada Safar last month, dropping many a political bomb. He also renewed his vendetta against friend-turned-foe, Mulayam. At a public rally in Lucknow recently, he made CPI General Secretary, A. B. Bardhan & Union Ministers Ram Vilas Paswan & Lalu Prasad come on one platform with a single agenda – prevent Mulayam from coming back to power. His alliance might not win UP polls, but can ensure Mulayam’s defeat. A wily politician’s last encore! That perhaps is the real V. P. – a man who never forgets his friends & never pardons his foes; or better, the crusader of personal causes!

Not to be left out, Raymond India, on one hand, forged the JV route by roping in United Cotton of Belgium; and at the same time, acquired Regency Textiles Portuguesa Limittada (Portugal) to increase its annual denim capacity to 30 million meters. As per Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), exports of Indian textile and apparel are growing at 15%. Promises, Ajay Sahai, Director General, FIEO, “More and more overseas acquisition will continue and the expansion mode of Indian manufacturers can’t be defeated by China and USA.” As the thoroughly ethnic sounding bigwigs of Indian haute couture – like Mahavir Spinning Mills, Alok Industries and Gokaldas Exports – gear up for the big game with planned investments of nearly $6 billion for 2006, there are two clear trends emerging – the movement of exporters towards value added textiles and an increasing focus on markets other than the US.

IIPM Editorial : "Pacifism" is a “bad argument"

He adds that their “pacifism” is a “bad argument,” because he thinks violence is sometimes legitimate. We may well agree that violence is sometimes legitimate (I do), but “I think” is hardly an overwhelming argument in the real-world cases that he discusses. By “just war,” counter-terrorism or some other rationale, the United States exempts itself from the fundamental principles of world order that it played the primary role in formulating and enacting. After World War II, a new regime of international law was instituted. Its provisions on laws of war are codified in the UN Charter, the Geneva conventions and the Nuremberg principles, adopted by the General Assembly. The Charter bars the threat or use of force unless authorised by the Security Council, or under Article 51, in self-defense against armed attack until the Security Council acts. In the year of 2004, a high level UN panel including, among others, former National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft, concluded that “Article 51 needs neither extension nor restriction of its long-understood scope.”

In the past, the EC had sued other governments for similar discriminations. Air France was also sued by EasyJet, a leading no-frills airline, over a similar issue. It had bravely confronted the merger of Air France and Dutch KLM, declaring it as a trade malpractice and anti-competitive. The two airlines have had consistent clashes over state aid. On the other side of the story, Ryanair had also been accused by Air France of profiting from low-priced arrangements with the council-owned airports. In February 2004, the European Commission found out that Ryanair too, received a similar aid of more than $5.15 million from the Wallonia Regional Government in Belgium.

Lodha to face trial in criminal case

The scuffle for control over the Rs.24 billion worth assets of the MP Birla group, whose present market value is assessed at Rs.50 billion, has gone a step ahead. The case filed by the Birlas accuses RS Lodha and three others, SN Prasad, V. Gauri Shankar and S. K. Daga for alleged criminal breach of trust and forging the will of Priyamvada Birla. The Supreme Court has refused an appeal from RS Lodha, which was seeking the quashing of the criminal case fi led against him to determine whether the will was forged.

Philippines has been a victim of armed insurgency and terrorism from Islamic outfits that want the southern part of the nation to secede from Philippines. Thailand is witnessing an armed uprising in the southern parts, where Muslims are predominantly present. An insignificant force of armed militant groups in Thailand has now linked up with elements of Al Qaeda and are giving Thai security forces relentless nightmares. This sudden upsurge of political Islam in South East Asia is bad news for the world.

The principal aim of Al Qaeda has been to establish a ‘caliphate’ that ranges from Indonesia in the east to Africa in the west, and drives away ‘the infidel Christian forces’. Smartly dressed troops in fatigues in Kathmandu may seem to give an impression that King Gyanendra is in control. Yet, the hundreds of troops with automatic weapons surrounding and protecting his palace give away the state of siege the country is facing.
